Welcome to Liyang!
We arrived safely in China just over a week ago. We are living in the "small" city of Liyang (pop. 600,000) in the Jiangsu Province about 450 km west of Shanghai. The capital of our province is Nanjing ("nan" means south and "jing" means capital). Nanjing was the southern capital of China during the Communist revolution in 1949. Subsequently, the Kuomintang army was forced to flee Nanjing to Taiwan.
An interesting note: "bei" means north (Beijing = north capital) and "tong" means east (Tongjing - what we call Tokyo - is east capital).
We are teaching at the Liyang Bilingual Experimental School. Students in our school receive their lessons in both Mandarin and English. Our apartment is located within the school complex - just above the school cafeteria. We live in a 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment and share a kitchen and dining room with another foreign teacher (Jessica from Scotland). We are very pleased with the apartment which came fully furnished with a color TV (no English programs), a computer with Internet, and a full kitchen. We haven't had this much space since we got married!
